Aerodynamics is an exact science, although changes in speed and body shape mean that its rules are not universally applicable. The size and shape of the individual cyclist, surrounding atmospheric conditions and specific requirements are also fundamental. We began with an in-depth study into how air flows around a cyclist’s body in motion, in order to understand how helmets fit in to the overall picture of cycling aerodynamics. We then set ourselves the further challenge of verifying our findings in our wind tunnel lab. This gave us the chance to consolidate

and refine our design. Next, we went even further by asking real cyclists to test our helmets in real situations. This is the only way of ensuring optimum design; we know that testing in an artificial situation is never enough. An individual cyclist’s height, the angle of their head, how the helmet sits on their head, the size and shape of their torso and face, how they arch their spine…these are just some of the variables that have a significant impact on helmet aerodynamics.

Our Powerlogic Lab set itself the difficult task of creating helmets that offer cyclists advanced aerodynamic performance, without compromising on features like ventilation and weight. We found a successful way of balancing the flow of air inside the helmet with the air that flows in various directions around the outside. We called this solution Advanced Aerodynamic Design.

It features a series of advanced aerodynamic characteristics that together provide the Z Alpha with the best balance between ventilation and aerodynamics available on the market today. This helmet came out as the fastest in real time trials and consistently offered the highest level of ventilation; it offers even better ventilation than many traditional open helmets currently available.

THE MECHANICS OF A CRASH

Although no two crashes are identical, two main types of force - linear and rotational - are related to the majority of brain injuries. Most real-world impacts actually subject your brain to a combination of both linear and rotational forces.

HOW DOES IT WORK

There are three main components to a MIPS-equipped helmet: the EPS liner, the Low Friction Liner and an elastomeric attachment system between them. In an impact, the elastomeric attachment system stretches to allow the EPS liner to rotate independently around your head. How much does the system move? Just a couple of millimeters. But that few millimeters of movement can reduce the amount of rotational force that may be transferred to your brain. The more red the more strain to the brain. Finite element model illustrating strain in the brain from a similar angled impact when the user is wearing a helmet without MIPS and a helmet with MIPS. Experimental and numerical tests, using a Hybrid III crash test dummy head with nine accelerometers measuring accelerations in all axis, has shown a reduction of the forces to the brain.
